Guidelines for Authors

The journal Starobulgarska Literatura publishes original scholarly research in the fields of Old Bulgarian literature, Palaeoslavistics, medieval studies, the history of Slavic literatures, and related areas within the humanities. The journal accepts for publication studies and articles, editions of source materials, book reviews and scholarly surveys, as well as personalia and reports on academic events. Republishing or simultaneous submission to other journals is not permitted.

Publication in Starobulgarska Literatura takes place after successful completion of the peer-review process and editorial preparation, in accordance with the following deadlines:

For publication within a given calendar year, articles submitted by the end of May, as well as book reviews, personalia, and reports on academic events submitted by the end of August of the respective year, will be considered. Materials submitted after these deadlines are returned to the authors or, with their consent, considered for the next issue. The date of submission is indicated upon publication. The editorial board notifies authors of its decision regarding publication within six weeks of receipt. The editorial team maintains active communication with authors and provides timely updates on the editorial process. The annual issue is published in November or in early December.

Manuscripts proposed for publication (in doc/docx and pdf formats) should be submitted by email to: starobulglit@gmail.com.

Starobulgarska Literatura accepts articles written in Bulgarian, English, German, or Russian, with a maximum length of 60 pages. If the article is not written in the author’s native language, the editorial board recommends that the text be checked by a native speaker prior to submission. Each article must be accompanied by an abstract of no fewer than 15 lines in English (respectively in Bulgarian). If necessary, the editorial board can provide translation of the abstract. Authors should provide up to six keywords in the language of the article and in English. Keywords and abstracts are not required for reviews, personalia, or reports on academic events.

The author’s affiliation, email address, and ORCID are published in both the print and online versions of the article. The title, author’s name, institutional affiliation, city, and country must also be provided in the language of the abstract.

Authors bear full responsibility for the content of their texts. Plagiarism and improper use of artificial intelligence (AI) are not permitted. All sources of funding (projects, institutions, grants) must be clearly acknowledged.

By submitting a manuscript, the author grants the journal the right of first publication. Any subsequent use of the text must acknowledge the original publication.

Final acceptance for publication is subject to approval by the editorial board and anonymous reviewers. Reviewers’ comments (if any) are forwarded to the authors for necessary revisions. The editorial team seeks, whenever possible, to coordinate its interventions in the submitted texts with the authors and to provide them with proofs.

All materials should be written in Word using the following fonts: Times New Roman for the main text and Greek quotations, CyrillicaOchrid10U for the Old Slavonic quotations, and CyrillicaOldStyle10U for Slavic texts from the 18th-19th century.  CyrillicaOchrid10U may be downloaded here, and CyrillicaOldStyle10U may be downloaded here. Please use 12-point font for the main text and 10-point font for footnotes, first line by 1.25 cm, line spacing 1.5 lines.

All the margins of the pages (top, bottom, left and right) should be set up at 2.5 cm. The author should differentiate between dashes used between pages (56–58), dates (1261–1453) and publishing places (London–New York), and hyphens used in double names (Hans-Georg Beck, В. Тъпкова-Заимова, Кирило-Методиевска енциклопедия) or compounds (fourteenth-century manuscript).

All references and explanatory notes must be numbered in a consecutive list at the bottom of the page. In the references, the literature is cited in abbreviated form in the original language of the publication: author’s surname, year of the edition, page/s cites (cf. Божилов 2008: 24–26; Hannick 2006; Соболевский 1885: 129). In the case of multi-volume editions, the abbreviated quotation should point to the volume instead of the year of publication (Старобългарски речник 2). Abbreviations, such as “Ibid.”, “Idem”, “Op. cit..”, as well as “ff.” (for indicating range of the pages cites) are not used in the footnotes. The character spacing used for the surnames of the authors is 3 pt (Format → Font → Character Spacing → 3 pt, the author’s name being marked beforehand up to the letter before the last one).

The full titles of the publications cited are given after the main text, in alphabetical order:

Божилов 2008: Божилов, Ив. Византийският свят. София, 2008.

In the bibliography, the names of the authors and the titles are always cited in the original language of publication; Cyrillic titles are not transliterated; the Old Slavonic quotations are also cited in original without being transliterated.
